When it comes to High Intensive Interval Training (HIIT), having the right gear can make all the difference. I’ve tested out a number of different exercise mats to find the best exercise mat for HIIT. Whether you’re doing burpees, jumping jacks, or mountain climbers, having a supportive, non-slip surface to exercise on is key to getting the most out of your workout.
The Best Exercise Mat for HIIT
Miramat Exercise Mat for HIIT
I currently use the Miramat exercise mat for my HIIT workouts. Unlike a regular exercise mat, the Miramat is large exercise mat and is made from a denser material. This means it has a similar feel to most gym floors and is perfect for doing high intensity workouts.
What I like about the Miramat
- Extra Large Size – The Miramat comes in a number of different sizes all of which are larger than regular exercise mats. I’ve found that I can easily to HIIT style workouts on the mat without needing to step off.
- Firm Surface – The mat has a firm surface. It’s harder than exercise mats designed for yoga. This surface provides some impact protection but is solid enough for even the most intense workouts. The surface provides some grip and isn’t slippy. Overall I found it a very stable workout surface.
- Long Lasting – These mats are used by gyms all over Australia. They get used day in day out. So for home use, they will definitely last a very long time.
- Protect Floors and Carpets – The Miramat will protect your hard and carpeted floors during a workout. I wouldn’t be keen on doing a HIIT workout on carpet as it would wear it down quite quickly. The Miramat can go on carpet and hard floors. It’s heavier enough to provide a stable surface no matter what’s underneath.
I guess the only downside of the Miramat is the weight. It’s a heavy mat. It’s not quite as portable as some options, but at the same time, this weight provides a steady workout surface. I’ve written a full Miramat review here.
Sensu Mat
If you’re looking for an alternative to the Miramat the Sensu Exercise Mat is a good choice.
The Sense mat is made of a thicker material compared to the Miramat but it’s not quite as large. This makes it more portable. If you’re doing Hiit workouts away from home it could be a good option.
Do You need an Exercise Mat for HIIT Workouts?
I find I can be much more confident in my movements when I’m working on a solid gym style exercise mat. It will provide more grip and it slightly cushions on more high impact movements. HIIT workouts usually have quite a bit of jumping and an exercise mat will make landing a little softer.
I wouldn’t use a regular exercise mat for HIIT workouts. These mats are made of softer foam and are really designed for Yoga type workouts. They also aren’t big enough for a HIIT workout. An exercise mat for HIIT needs to be big enough to accommodate stepping backwards and forwards as well as side to side.
