Looking to construct a home gym in your apartment? Selecting the appropriate equipment is crucial for maximizing your workout experience within limited space. I have successfully set up a home gym in my apartment, allowing me to enjoy full-body workouts comparable to those at a commercial gym. Here are some of the best equipment options for an apartment home gym:
Adjustable Dumbbells
If you’re looking to do any kind of strength training, the best place to start is usually with a set of adjustable dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells are perfect for an apartment home gym as they take up a limited amount of space. My set of Nuobell dumbbells takes up around 40x30cm space on the ground.
Workout Bench
A workout bench will compliment a set of adjustable dumbbells and allow you to do a full body strength workout with just two bits of gym equipment. While you can do a few exercise moves with just a pair of dumbbells, a bench will open up a whole range of new exercise options.
I recommend getting an adjustable bench. This way you can do both flat, incline and seated movements.
Another great option for apartments are workout benches that have built in dip and pull up bars. There are a few great options now available in Australia. These benches let you attach a dip bar and a pull up bar to the bench and they take up a minimal amount of space.
Foldable Treadmill
If you’re looking for cardio equipment that works well in an apartment home gym, I’d recommend either a spin bike or treadmill. There’s a pretty good range of foldable treadmills in Australia. Some of these treadmills can fold completely flat to be stored under a bed. Others fold up vertically so they can be stored in a corner.
Portable Gym Flooring
If you’re doing any type of workout in an apartment it’s probably a good idea to get yourself a large exercise mat that replicates gym flooring. This will protect your carpets and hard floors and also provide a solid workout area. I use the Miramat which is great over carpet. If you don’t have the option to put in permanent gym flooring this is the next best thing.
Smart Gyms
Unfortunately many of the best smart gyms are currently not available in Australia. But smart gyms do make a good option for apartments and usually pack a ton of workout options into a small space.
One good option available in Australia is the Vitruvian trainer. It’s relatively small and perfect for using in an office or spare room.
Spin Bike
Spin Bikes are a great option for cardio workouts. Most online training programs like Apple Fitness+, iFit etc have exercise bike workouts and they don’t take up too much space. I’d go for a Spin Bike that is portable enough to move between rooms. This way you can easily use it in front of a TV when working out and then put it away between uses.
